Liberty Link® Cotton

Liberty Link Cotton has been genetically modified to be tolerant to Liberty Herbicide®, allowing for effective weed control in cotton. This innovative technology, developed by Bayer CropScience, offers growers an exciting new mode of action for the control of weeds in cotton.

Liberty Link Cotton represents Bayer CropScience's first genetically modified (GM) crop to be made available in Australia. Its introduction into the farming environment represents a significant innovation for the Australian Agricultural system. The technology provides an alternative herbicide for resistance management.

Liberty Herbicide

Liberty Herbicide contains the active ingredient glufosinate-ammonium, a member of the glycine group of herbicides, Group N and offers a new and exciting option for weed management in cotton.

Liberty Herbicide is a non-volatile herbicide with selective activity against many annual and perennial weeds in Liberty Link® Cotton varieties.

The key benefits of Liberty Herbicide include:

  • Control of hard to kill weeds including volunteer cotton (excluding Liberty Link Cotton), peach vine, sesbania pea and bladder ketmia.
  • A novel herbicide group - Group N, providing a new herbicide rotation option.
  • A wide application window - up to 10 weeks prior to harvest.
  • An easy to use product, which doesn't require additional wetter to be added.
  • An easy to mix product.

The Research and Development of Liberty Link Cotton

Liberty Link Cotton has been trialed in Australia by Bayer CropScience since 2003. Initial breeding work was carried out by CSIRO in 2000, with Bayer CropScience providing the LLCotton25 event to be included in elite variety development. Since introgression of the event six years of breeding work has culminated in the release of three CSD elite varieties in 2006. In addition to the CSIRO breeding program, Bayer CropScience have completed over 100 Liberty Herbicide field trials.
